First Grave on the Right

Don'd judge the cover. Also WARNING this is a girls book. I really wouldn't recommend it for guys.

Also, this is gonna be short because I got a new book.

This week I read First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones, personally I thought it was a great book, and I loved how witty the main character was, and the plot was really interesting. Charley Davidson is the grim reaper. Meaning she can see ghosts and the ghosts see her. Instead of hiding from her ability she uses it to solve cases, giving relief to the dead. That was my favorite part. This book, though has A LOT of adult content, romance and some strange views. You have been warned. If you are a girl and you like supernatural/ghost romances read this book.

Warning: theres a lot of romance. : (

Skullduggery Pleasent

Ha ha ha, I almost forgot about this assignment. This week I read the series Skullduggery Pleasant by Derik Landy. I really, really like this series, its like an english crossover between percy jackson and fiction mysteries. It was awesome, each and every book was new and original and the characters are well developed and evolved. The first book, Skullduggery Pleasant is about a girl trying to get to the middle of the her uncles death, when she comes across the knowledge that he was not all she remembered. Probable a one week book, I would recommend this book to anyone fond of fun, non-romancy, fast packed, original, mystery books.

Sabriel

This week, I read Sabriel by Garth Nix, this book was really cool and engaging. Sabriel's father is a necromancer, the Abhorsen. Like the rest of his line, he is dedicated to fighting living dead, returning them through the gates of death. Sabriel has grown up in a boarding school, far away from the living dead and the responsibilities of her line. But when her father goes missing, trapped in the world of the dead, she has no choice but to go looking for him. This book was awesome, it was written in an intelligent voice and the characters were all twisted, likable and dark. I really liked the combination of fantasy and modern ideas, how two worlds could be combined into one. One of magic and one of technology. My favorite part though was the storyline; because of its originality, it was engrossing and somewhat confusing, which added to the plot. I would recommend this book to anyone fond of His Dark Materials and Eragon.

Leviathan

This weekend, I read Leviathan by Scott Westerfield, and for the record, it was awesome! Told in the perspectives of an exiled heir, and a female pilot in training, this book was an awesome take on world war I. Genetically engineered animals and wicked steam-punk machines are the weapons of choice in the early 1900s. Europe is in war, counties are fighting against each other, the darwinists verses the inventors. Deryn, more commonly known as Dylan is a darwinist, Alek is not only an inventor, but the heir to an empire. When the their paths cross, the two find themselves fighting side by side with their enemy. This book was amazing, I loved how Westerfield described the creatures in his books and how he filled it with such original ideas. The characters were relatable and they all had some really interesting and original perspectives in the story. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventures and steampunk, with the recommendation that it would be a one week book. Also... the illustrations were awesome!

Blood Red Road

On sunday, I read the Blood Red Road by Moira Young. Having randomly found this book in the school library, I really, really enjoyed it. The story is amazingly written, completely original, and it carries an original perspective throughout the entire story. Zaba has never left her home in silver lake; growing up with her father, twin brother and her little sister. But after four cloaked men kidnap her brother, Zaba is forced to leave behind everything she has ever known in order to find him. I thought this story was amazing, I loved how the dialogue of the book supported Zaba's personality by being written in her style of speech and how the world was both so similar and different to the one we live in. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys gritty, exiting books with the warning that it does involve some violent and gruesome activities, instances.

The Infernal Devices

This week, I read the Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. After already reading the Mortal Instruments, I am quite hooked on her books. Taking place around the 1800s, this book is about a girl named Theresa Grey, who, after being kidnapped, struggles to understand a whole new world, one that resides just under the surface, its blending in with modern life. Although filled with vampires, warlocks, demons, werwolves and automatons, this steampunkey book is NOT like Twilight. I really like Cassandra Clare's writing, its funny exiting and filled with intriguing dialogue. Her books are filled with hundreds of little plot twists, that are both aggravating and addicting. Probably a one week book, I would recommend this book to fans of Legend, and Divergent.

SOLSC 31/31

YES!!!
Yes, yes, yes, YES! My last post! it is truly wonderful! No more slices! No more constantly strangling my mind for new ideas or phrasings. Honestly, this is like the sixth post I have done that talks about the horrors of slicing, (my dearest apologies to any teachers unlucky enough to be reading this, but its true). True, this assignment has had its ups... and downs, I liked reading everything, but I'm so done with these slices. A month is enough for me. It feels WONDERFUL to finally be finished, or at least I will be finished after I post this. Victory! I have won the game! 31 slices. its wonderful! Because I feel like celebrating I will insert small versions of all the 'cool' pictures that I posted on my blog this past month! The snow flake is my favorite.

SOLSC 30/31

Horror! Oh how pathetic this is
for I am stuck with this no thoughts or ideas
for these blood curdling slices.
For they are a much a-cursed task, and my spiteful mind has run out of morbid paragraphs or strange lists.
for in these slices, i must write about MYSELF!
A truly awful assignment for my introverted mind
oh how i loath these bits of writing, dreaming about their demise.
For their demise is what I truly hope for.
Curse these slices.

This is not another of my fake paragraphs, I really do hate having to do slices of life.

SOLSC 29/31s PROCRASTINATION

Procrastination is the
Royal art
Of "forgetting"
Claiming innocence and
Refusing to
Acknowledge the work of a
Student.
The art
Is practiced
Nationally
And it is universally understood.
To all the students
I speak to you,
Oh I beg of you,
Never stop procrastinating, it is the ONLY way you will ever get a life in college.

SOLSC 28/31

THREE:

A big wonderful number! Three winners, three gods, three more posts left. I have no idea whatsoever about what to write this post about so, I'm just kinda winging it. WHY? Because I'm bored and much to lazy to come up with an actually interesting idea. I feel like a towel thats been squeezed out and then waked repeatably against a brick wall when it comes to these slices. In the beginning of the month, I actually tried to make them cool and interesting, but now I'm counting the posts until I'm done. THREE (not including this weird and strangely personal post) left! Three posts left. I'm a worn and overjoyed towel with no water left for ideas. Oh the joy! I'm ALMOST done! Victory is almost here!

Sincerely,
A really, really bored blogger

SOLSC 27/31 BOOKS!!!

I just got a whole bunch of books today so I am really, really happy. Of course, because of that I would rather not write a long slice because reading is much better than writing slices. I'm only doing it because of the trip to Starbucks and the draw your name out of a hat for a prize thingie. So... since this post is bot supposed to be long, I leave you to go burry my nose in the pages of a paperback.

SOLSC 26/31

Okay... so I often get bored in the agonizing torture of math, so lately I have started bringing a sketch book with me. Since math causes me so much dread and pain, I thought that it would be entertaining for you to see the product of my suffering. Please do keep in mind that this was a quick sketch and the picture quality on my phone is not the best.

SOLSC 25/31 Book Blog

This week, I read the Graveyard Book by Dave McKean which is the story of a graveyard. This book was interesting and different, and I really enjoyed the writing style because it gave an interesting perspective on the characters. Along with his sister Nobody Owen's parents are dead, murdered by a man named Jack. Now, he's being raised by Mr and Ms Owens, who, are also dead. Nobody likes it in the graveyard, the ghosts are funny and entertaining, but he craves to se the world of the living. The only problem is... the man named Jack is still out there, looking for him. I really enjoyed this book, its was interesting, creative and unusual. Most certainly a one week book, I would recommend this book to anyone open to a new perspective, along with the knowledge that it is aimed towards a younger audience.

SOLSC 24/31 Draining a Lake

I think that I prefer my earlier slices because I was able to write about things that really interested me, instead of spending countless amounts of time racking my brain in order to find something interesting to write about. Its actually really, really hard to find ideas now that I am nearing the end of the month, which is both annoying and frustrating. Theres a visible difference between my slices: the earlier slices are much longer and detailed and the later slices are much shorter (like this one). I TRY to make them long, interesting, and sometimes morbid, but its getting harder and harder. Its like a mountain lake, when small amounts are taken, the change is not noticeable, but when large amounts are taken frequently, the visible shrinking of the water line is quite prominent, and the more water that is taken, the faster it disappears. But... if the draining stopped, slowly the lake would begin to refill with new, fresh water. Water that is sparkling and clear, completely in contrast with the murky waters that is soaking in the mud.

SOLSC 23/31 writing this cause I have to

For starters, I have two dogs, a pug and an english bulldog. This particular slice is about the bulldog.

My dog is ALWAYS hungry and she loves looking for food. Once, she stole a banana out of a lady's purse, but one of her favorite places to go looking for food is in my brothers room. He always leaves food on the floor and he never closes his door. She's found halloween candy, apples, chewing gum, and ect. This weekend she got 'lucky' and found a full bag of apricots, which she devoured. Apricots are a very curious snack: they are delicious, but they are supposed to be eaten in small quantities because too many are bad for digestion. Really bad. Let that sink in. My dog ate an entire bag of them, spent the rest of the day sick, and then guess what? We had to drive home, with a sick, smelly and miserable dog. The stench was unbearable, my brother spent the whole ride holding his shirt up over his nose. It was disgusting.

The End

SOLSC 22/31 Really Really Random

Question: Does anybody know what SOLSC stands for? I know that SOL stands for Slice of Life, but I'm completely clueless about the SC part. I've been writing it on my posts for so long that I can not remember what it originally stands for. I'm getting really pissed at my computer because it has a mark on the screen and whenever I read my work, it looks like an accidental coma. Just so annoying. Also, Blogger does this weird thing that whenever I finish a word really close to the edge of the margins, it doesn't show when I press the space bar. Like, I'll press it over and over again thinking it it just my computer thats messed up, but when I move onto the next word its already in the middle of the page. My phone does the same thing and I don't know why, but it really annoys me. A lot.

WELCOME
To the End of my Rant

(much better than The End)

SOLSC 21/31

Ten more slices left!

The sun is setting, or has it already? I can no longer view the bright circular orb that has been over head for the last 12 hours, but the sky is still painted with colors and the light still illuminates most of the east. Despite the darkening sky, which is slowly fading into a deep violet, the world is still alive. At this time most are usually finishing up dinner, or settling down to the typical brain washing brought on by television. Some, like me are probably trying to finish up a homework assignment that they belatedly forgot about until the last minute. Most of the animals though, are quiet, they've already started to fade from a long work filled day. The birds that created an orchestra of sound this morning are now silent, gone from the sky and trees. Bats take flight, silhouetted by the purple sky. The day is over, but the night has just begun.

SOLSC 20/31 Today

Light shines through the open window, illuminating the objects in the messy room. Surprisingly enough, the afternoon light is still crisp from the morning, very unlike the warmer light we are used to. Every shadow is defined, stunning against the tanned paint and bricks. The shadows of the trees are the best, the taller the tree, the better the shadow. My neighborhood filled with tall trees, that stretch up into the air, branches straining for every inch of sunlight possible. Already, the sun is far enough down in the sky that the shadows are longer than the tree itself. They overlap with other trees until there is a forest of dark branches on the ground, a forest of shadows that grows, constantly changing shape as the sun dips lower in the sky. They stay there, slowly moving and changing throughout the entire day until the sun finally recedes behind the distant mountains.

SOLSC 19/31 Music

The music is fluid. It beats in time with clock, or perhaps the clock beats in time with the music, but either way the corresponding sounds have an almost hypnotic quality. Weaving in and out of chords and harmonies, connecting a thousand different sounds with a single thread of rhythm. Music is like art, confusing and understood, complicated and clear, a song filled with so many feelings that everything seems to blend together into a chorus of thoughts. It is beautiful and understanding, completely independent from the viewer, but at the same time craving for a positive opinion. Music is different in the eyes of each viewer; the feeling we feel when listening to music are original to our souls, and no other can truly understand nor duplicate the emotions that come when listening. Nor does any song feel the same. Music is universal, it is a way of expression and feeling. There are so many different musical cultures and styles there is freedom to choose it. No one can dictate the decision, because no one can understand and hear the music the way you do. It doesn't matter what others think of a song, only what you think of it.

SOLSC 18/31 The Maze Runner

This week I read the Maze Runner by James Dashner, which, although part of a dystopian trilogy is nothing like the Hunger Games or Divergent. Having had this book recommended to me on many occasions, I found it enjoyable, fast moving and original. Thomas, the main character, can remember nothing but his name, and after a terrifying journey on the 'lift', finds himself in the center of a giant maze. Soon Thomas finds himself in a terrifying battle for survival, not only for himself, but all of the other human inhabitants in the maze as well. And the only chance for survival is to escape the maze. This book was fast paced and exiting, the characters were relatable and likable. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Hunger Games with the recommendation that it be a one week book.

SOLSC 17/31 A Quote...

So... I was really bored and decided that instead of my typical paragraph, I would give in to my creative wanderings and write a quote. Then, I decided to fancy it up, writing it out in a cool font and style (some of the words are abbreviated). This is an original quote and I would prefer that I keep the credit for it. Ignore the grammar, I've had a hard enough time putting it into words already. Also I'm sorry if the picture is blurry.

"With every new breath, we are both the oldest and the youngest that we will ever be again, and just that much closer to death. "

SOLSC 16/31 March 16

Today is the...
1st day of the week
The 16 day of the month
The 10th week of the year
And...
Drumroll please
The 75 day of the year

Also, its is the 16th, which means I'm over halfway done with our March Slice of Life Challenge! *Sounds of fireworks and explosions*

Today, the play is over, it ended late last night after strike and the cast and crew party. On tuesday, well probably have to finish cleaning the wood shop and the tool crib, but at leas the worst is over. Today, I slept in late, then watched some TV, had lunch and now I'm doing "homework". Ahh don't you just love procrastination? I've become quite the expert at doing my spanish in the car, as well as my math at lunch. I really hate math.

SOLSC 15/31

BEWARE! Beware the Ides Of March! Happy anniversary of Julius Cesar's death everyone! May you day be plagued with bad luck and misfortune. My dear acquaintance, I warn you against the liberators  for Rome in the time of old, when the legions ruled the land and young emperor Julius Cesar still lived and walked apron the ground. The liberators, stuffed flu of sin and greed, plotted against the world, brewing a plan so evilly vile as to remove their leader from his throne. "We shall stabeth him twenty and nine times" they quoteth. Riots shook the once plentiful and proud land, chaos destroying the world. BEWARE! Beware the Ides Of March!

SOLSC 14/31 The Morning Light

The morning sun is crisp and bright. Darkening the shadows and illuminating the earth, it is as though no other morning can be as bright as this one. The light is strong, almost solid, as it shines through the leaves and the curtains. Its rays catch on the dust that swirls in the air, effected only by your passing as you make your way through the empty house, footboards creaking slightly under your soft steps. The light, is everywhere, on the walls, windowsills, stair rails, even the vines that grow around the living room. In the east facing window, a crystal sphere is suspended by an invisible thread. Hanging about eight inches from the top of the sill, it seems to absorb the light, caring the sun's rays deep within itself, compressing them together until the pressure is unbearable, and the lights shoot out of the cut glass in a hundred different directions. Painting the wall and the staircase in small patches of rainbow, like the pedals of a flower or the leaves of an invisible vine. Its minuscule tendrils snaking off in a hundred different directions, connected only by a single globe of light. Sometimes those tiny rays of light look like a kaleidoscope. When the crystal is spun on its thread, the tiny rainbows of color that paint the walls seem to dance. They move so fast that it is almost impossible to see their movements as they flow across the banisters, but slowly, as the cut glass starts to slow its spinning, the movements become more defined, more precise, until its like being surrounded by a storm of color.

SOLSC 12/31 Slightly Morbid

The bridge is old, its stone structure crumbling and worn. The sharp edges it was built with, have vanished, long since eroded by the fierce wind and rain. The bricks are worn, beaten down into a smooth stone path by hundreds of feet, wagons and cars. The sides and rails though, are still sharp, the stones piled into walls, columns and arches. Each stone in the wall is different, varying in size color and shape they are compiled together. Imagine the stories that each of these rocks could tell; each one would be different, describing moments and memories more than two centuries old in such detail that you feel transported into another world entirely. Or maybe they speak about something that happened only moments before, something that only the stones were able to see or understand. To the inhabitants of the bridge time would seem infinite, an unimportant factor as they feel the vibrations of thousands as they walk across the stones. A
lready they have witnessed an infinite number of people come and go in the world sensing there presence for years before it vanishes disappearing from the world forever. Some of the rocks have shattered, forced to sit in silence, trapped and unmoving as they have witnessed some leave the earth on their own accord. People filled with so much sadness and despair that their emotions were transferred into the bridge, leaving invisible scars that will never leave and only fade after time.

SOLSC 11/31 Reading

BRIEF INTRODUCTION: For language arts, everyone in my class reads a book a week and then we blog about it, talking about the plot, writing style and characters.

This week I  read/finished City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare. This is the fifth book in a series, called the mortal instruments, and I have been hooked on since the first book (City of Bones). The story is about a teenager named Clary, who is able to see things that others can't. At first she thinks herself insane, but then realizes that she's part of a secret race of humans called shadow hunters, who protect the mundanes from demons and vampires. AND... its not a love story like twilight, which is GREAT! Unlike other stories I have read, this one felt original, was captivating and kept the reader guessing, even after the book ended. I really like the writing style because it was extremely descriptive, but still left enough room for your imagination to fill in the gaps. Also, I really liked how relatable the characters were. The story kept switching perspectives, which gave you a feeling of understanding for all of the characters. This book was pretty long and time-consuming, so I would consider it a two week book and recommend it to fans of Divergent and Legend. ALSO... ignore the cover.

SOLSC 10/31 The Forest

The leaves shake, their long leafy tendrils uncurling in an attempt to latch on, to pull you close. It may not seem like it, but the forest is always moving. Small movements invisible to the naked eye are what allows the environment to grow. A rustle in the leaves; grass as it sways in the breeze, springing back up after your foot leaves the ground. Thorns reach out, searching, snagging on bare skin and ripping into the fabric of your clothes, desperate to connect with something living, to take part in your movements. Branches snap back into places after being moved aside, pine needles and leaves falling to the dark ground. Goat heads reach up to grab unknown passerby, unnoticed as they latch onto fur and fabric. The leaves whisper, a cool, crisp breeze heavy with the promise of snow. Spiraling around the forest, brushing the tops of trees and then diving to the ground, creating ripples in still water and a path through the dense undergrowth.
Unseen eyes watch you, their owner hidden in the shadows, sliding through the pools of darkness with a predator's grace: silent and deadly. They are in the trees, looking through the branches, down at the scene below, looking down on you. Everything is silent. Here peace surrounds everything, falling down on the trees like invisible snow. Muffling everything but the wind.
