Darkwood

Over the break, one of the books that I read was Darkwood by M. E. Breen. I thought that the settings for this book were really creative and unknown to most fiction writings. The story revolves around a thirteen year old girl, who after escaping from abusive family members finds herself in a battle for her own survival fighting both human and animal monsters. I thought that Breen's version of night (a void of utter blackness that blankets the land in seconds) was really creative, original and captivating for the reader. This book was a very quick read and not very deep, and I would recommend this 289 paged book to anyone looking for a easy book with a compelling plot.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
C. S. Lewis

My classic for the week was the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. This book was amazing and i can't believe that i hand't read it before. Despite its aim for a younger audience, I really enjoyed the characters, creative plot and older language. Because of its unique plot, I really enjoyed making connections to some of the newer books I have read. The story is about four siblings who after being evacuated from there homes because of bombings, stumble onto an corresponding world name Narnia. Personally, I thought the characters were relatable although the hour and a half long book did not allow much time for the characters to really grow.

Skiing

Skiing
The snow was like cotton, soft and thick. It coated the trees, rocks and cliffs, creating pillows of soft powder that were fun to jump over. I loved the powder, it was completely forgiving and fun to fall into after trying something new. My skis would cut through the new snow easily, sometimes disappearing beneath it for long stretches of time. In my opinion, skiing is one of the best ways to forget about Expo and homework. Other than the snow, its really easy to just let everything flow out of my mind as I focus at the one task at hand.
Today, the snow on the ground was just like that: soft and comforting. However, it was indeed snowing the large wet flakes landing on shoulders and stinging any exposed skin as I descended the runs. Wind and clouds made it almost impossible to see, adding flat light to the already foggy sky. I disliked the light, but because of the new blanket of snow, there were less obstacles to notice. I was skiing and that was all that mattered.

Defy

This week I read Defy by Sara Larson and really enjoyed it. It is the story about a girl named Alexa who after seeing her parents murdered and home destroyed is forced to masquerade as a boy in order to survive. I really enjoyed this book and I thought the plot line, although the theme was not completely original was intriguing and was full of surprises and plot twists. I really liked how the main character Alex(a) was strong and independent as well as relatable. Being 300 pages long and a fast read, I would recommend this one week book to anyone who likes Cassandra Clare, The Hunger Games and Divergent.
